Textiles

Textiles can be influenced by many things such as nature, art, and home décor. Textiles are described as a flexible fabric that is woven, knitted or assembled using other methods of construction, and often composed of layers. The five stages of textile production are fiber, yarn, fabric construction, colors, pattern, and ornamentation, and finishes. Forecasters need to have an understanding of textiles, trims, findings, and materials, including how they produced, in order to articulate a textiles and material forecast (Rousso).

In St. Laurent’s Collection for spring 2013, most forecasters would be able to figure out where the designer got their inspiration. I when I was doing my research, I was able to find great inspiration from nature, art and other garments that had unique trims. I analyze each garment from the collection; I then brainstormed ideas that would relate to the name of the collection which is called “Women of the Canyon”.  I took two looks from this collection and made two trend pages about the texture used in each garment.  These are my trend boards and hope you enjoy them both.

I will show you two photos of the St. Laurent's Collection, and the objects that inspired the creation of the garment.

This Garment was inspired by the Grand Canyon. The texture of the jacket is suade and the frindge on the jacket reminds me of a dream catcher.

The second textile from YSL collection, resembles metallic gold

Metallic Gold is seen in almost everything from apparel to home decor. This garment could have been inspired from heavy knit sweaters that has a metallic finish to it, abstract artwork and jewelry that has tassels

Street Fashion vs. YSL collection

When a designer is creating a new collection for any season, the designer will need inspiration for the collection and will most likely get the insight from Street Fashion. The meaning of Street Fashion is an offbeat or avant-garde fashion inspired by contemporary culture of urban street people. When searching for some great street fashion, I traveled to College Hill in Providence RI. to see what the urban college students wear and what trends seemed to be popular.  While I was snapping photos of street fashion I was able to find fun trends such as oversized sweaters.

YSL

Then I looked at Yves St. Laurent’s current collection to find comparable fashion trends. I was able to evaluate my street fashion photos to YSL collection. I found similar design details such as the shape of the garments, the color stories, and the texture of the designs. The oversize sleeves in the YSL garments relates to the look of the oversize sweaters.  The color of the collection has dark and neutral shades such as black, grey, dark green, and purples.

Trend Color Forecasting

The theme of Yves Saint Laurent spring 2013 collection has a rock & roll and hippie style inspired influence. This is the first collection that new design director Hedi Slimane has created for Saint Laurent.  The name of this collection is called “Ladies of the Canyon.” (Vogue) This inspiration of being on a canyon is seen through the design details of each garment. For example, garments such as cigarette pants, paired with a cropped jacket in sequins with super-wide black satin lapels. This collection also featured other items such as jacket with exaggerated shoulders, a white shirt with a black floppy bow and a wide-brimmed hat. (Vogue)

Color forecasting was involved when creating this collection, this is a process of gathering, evaluating, understanding, and interpreting information to be able to predict the colors that will be desirable for the consumer in the upcoming season.(Russo) The color story of this collection called “Ladies of the Canyon”, is blue sky, camel forest, windy black, savannah red, hunter green, cream trail mix, purple breeze and yellow star bright. I truly believe that YSL will continue to use most of these colors in his 2013 summer collection. I think that these colors are very rich and luxurious.  We will most likely see these colors in a lighter shade for summer 2013.  A color forecaster is a specialist in the research and development of color prediction and often is associated with a forecasting service, manufacturer, retailer, or a textile producer. (Russo). (these photos are from Vogue, and is photos of the 2013 YSL Fashion show in Paris)
